What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns can be used to successfully treat teeth in a wide variety of situations, including the following:

  • When a tooth has broken or been fractured
  • When there is tooth decay that’s too severe to be treated with a typical filling
  • When a tooth has become weakened and needs additional support
  • When a tooth has been lost and its dental implant needs to be restored
  • When a tooth has undergone root canal therapy and needs to be restored

The custom-made crown covers the remaining structure of the natural tooth, both preserving what remains underneath and recreating the natural shape and strength of the tooth as it once was. Tooth-colored options are available for crowns at our practice, and the process for receiving one typically takes two appointments – one for the impressions and another to place the finished product once it’s received from the dental laboratory.

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are sturdy restorations that are designed to recreate one or more missing teeth that are together in a row. It’s anchored in place with two dental crowns that are attached to healthy teeth on either side of the gap, effectively allowing it to “bridge” space. Alternatively, Dr. Atsalis can use dental implants for a healthier, longer-lasting result. Like dental crowns, bridges will also typically require two appointments to complete.
